Hot News - June 2005   (June 4, 2005)

Website statistics: In May we were able to welcome on our website 19'154 visitors
from 108 different countries  who did 359'316 hits
                                (April = 18'392 visitors - 104 countries - 369'774 hits)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At the end of May, we arrived the second time in Saint Laurant-du-Maroni, the Western entrance
to French Guiana, after having stocked up our provisions in neighboring Suriname. The proximity of
"Europe" becomes immediately evident if we compare the (€-) prices: A gallon of gasoline for example
doesn't cost anymore just 2 US$, but a hefty 6 US$ on the Eastern side of the wide Maroni river!
Also the dark colored local people don't show anymore the same friendly and open attitude as those
of Suriname - the reason we couldn't figure out yet, although their gross national product is much
higher (=US$8'760) than that of its former Dutch neighbor (=US$2'140) due to the support by France.
Apart of that, they all carry a "European Passport", but obviously all this isn't relevant to show happier
faces.

Fortunately – at least for us – the present rainy season seems to be rather weak. Although the daily
rain showers occur (still) regularly, there are no long lasting downpours, which facilitates our every
day camping life considerably.
Our next destinations will be Kourou, the European space capital, and then Cayenne, the country's
capital. Luckily, two years ago, we were able to watch a launch of the Arian-5 rocket. Now the yearly
countdowns have since been halved, and in the near future apparently no new take off is expected.

Once we are in Cayenne, our imminent future will be decided. This was already the case in 2003,
but the reason was different at that time. Back then, we diverted to Trinidad, where our two years
Caribbean Cruise with our LandCruiser started. Now we are anxious to find out where the wind will
blow us this time.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On October 18th, 2004, we celebrated our 20th anniversary "on the road" in
St. Martin/St. Maarten in the Caribbean, after having driven through 150 countries.
