NEW FREIGHT SERVICE TO CONGO

TGS is pleased to announce the recent introduction of a new direct sea freight service to Pointe Noire, Congo. This service is operated by the Maersk line with direct sailings every 14 days on Sunday from the nearby port of Algeciras and a transit time of 15 days.

With both 20ft and 40ft container options available TGS can now offer one of the fastest delivery times between Europe and Congo.

For further information and prices please contact our freight department.

Land Cruiser GX

Product Range :

Toyota Landcruiser GX

We are pleased to announce that from 1st June 1997, TGS is expanding its product range and will be stocking the GX version of the Toyota Landcruiser Station Wagon. The arrival of this model now allows us to offer you two versions of the 80 series station wagon, the other model being the "standard" version that has always been in our vehicle range.

Many of you may already be familiar with the specification of the standard version and therefore, we would like to take this opportunity to tell you about some of the GX features.

Although both models are identical in many ways, i.e. engine, transmission, brakes and axles and optional extras such as power steering, extra fuel tank and High Altitude Compensator, it is primarily the interiors of the vehicles that are different.

The GX is supplied as a 5 seater with cloth trim and comes with headrests, front and rear, and carpet floor covering. Other features include a ceiling mounted accessory meter that incorporates the extra fuel tank gauge and altimeter.

Unlike the side opening rear door found on the standard model, the GX comes with a lift up / fold down version.

As a finishing touch, the exterior rear view mirrors are chrome plated.

With the standard version being used mainly for project / field operations, we see the GX model as a vehicle particularly suitable for Project Managers, Country Directors and Resident Representatives.

TGS delivers UNHCR vehicles on time despite French lorry drivers blockade

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees provides protection and assistance to the world's refugees. Since its creation in 1951, UNHCR has won two Nobel prizes for its work. It is currently responsible for more than 25 million refugees and returnees. It has some 5000 staff in 250 offices spread over 120 countries.

Towards the end of 1996 as the crisis unfolded in Eastern Zaire, TGS were called upon to assist UNHCR with the urgent supply of vehicles essential for their operations.

Transporting vehicles to Amsterdam Airport in The Netherlands would normally be a straightforward logistical operation for TGS. The French lorry drivers total blockade of roads truly tested TGS's logistical ability, as shown in the summary of events below:

28th November, UNHCR places an order with TGS for 43 vehicles. First 8 vehicles to be delivered to Amsterdam by the 1st December for an airlift. TGS prepare vehicles and arrange registration and insurance.

29th November, a team of selected drivers departs from Gibraltar with the first 8 units to Amsterdam via Barcelona, Lyon, Geneva, Frankfurt and Arnheim.

1st December, vehicles arrive on schedule and depart on chartered aircraft. Within 3 hours of arrival, drivers fly to Barcelona to collect 2nd batch of vehicles.

2nd December, 2 additional drivers depart in vehicles to Barcelona along with 8 vehicles onboard car transporters. The remaining 25 are containerised and shipped from the nearby port of Algeciras to Rotterdam for transfer to Amsterdam.

3rd December, 10 vehicles are driven from Barcelona to Amsterdam

5th December, vehicles arrive on schedule and depart on chartered aircraft.

6th December, remaining 25 units arrive at Amsterdam

Despite the mayhem caused by the blockade, the shortage of diesel in France, adverse weather conditions in Switzerland and severe traffic congestion in Germany, TGS were still able to meet UNHCR's deadlines, allowing their vitally important operations to proceed as planned.

Airlifts to Rwanda

With the recent re-occurrence of troubles in the Central African Region and the return home of many displaced Rwandan refugees, TGS has seen an increase in the demand for urgently required Toyota’s. With delivery times being a critical factor for many of the Relief Organisation’s working in this region, TGS has been called upon to deliver approximately 80 vehicles by Airfreight in the past 2/3 months.

Working closely with a small number of Air Charter specialists, TGS is able to offer its customers an airfreight service from Malaga, Spain (the nearest major airport to Gibraltar) direct to Kigali, Rwanda with only a short stop over in Cairo to refuel. Utilising 707 and DC8 freighter aircraft, we are able to load up to 5 vehicles at a time and subject to the fitting of additional options, vehicles have been delivered within 5 days from receipt of order.

More recently, we have been able to offer improved pricing and also the ability to load up to 6 vehicles on one aircraft. This is achieved by limiting the total aircraft cargo capacity to 15 tonnes, thus allowing the aircraft to fly directly to Kigali without the need for an expensive stop over in Cairo to take on extra fuel.

CARITAS,Cafod, Catholic Relief Services, Danish Red Cross, FAO,IFRC,UNOPS, UNDP,UNHCR & USAID/OFDA

WorldAid '96

WORLDAID '96 was the first global exposition and conference for emergency relief, held at Palexpo in Geneva from 30 September to 4 October 1996. The event brought together the business and humanitarian community with one clear purpose - to serve the vulnerable people of the world.

Toyota Gibraltar Stockholdings Limited (TGS) were proud to be the largest individual supporter of this major event, reflecting Toyota's position as the number one supplier of 4wd vehicles to the United Nations and Humanitarian Organisations.

The TGS stand was reportedly the busiest at the exhibition, with the exhibited vehicles attracting a great deal of interest. On display were the Landcruiser Stationwagon, Hilux Double Cabin and one of our Landcruiser Hardtop Ambulance Conversions, the latter receiving praise from many distinguished medical organisations. Fitted to the vehicles were several of the most popular TGS options, including bullbar, winch, MUL-T-LOCK transmission lock, radio-cassette, CODAN HF transceiver, anti-theft package and spare parts package. Manning the stand during the week were nine members of our sales team, our Managing Director and a senior representative from Toyota Motor Corporation.

This year the international community will spend around $8,000 million on emergency relief and rehabilitation.

Hopefully, as a result of this wonderful sharing experience, financial savings can be made allowing more lives to be saved.
