News September/October 2013       (Praia/Cape Verde, October 31st, 2013)

Website statistics:   Unfortunately 'Webalizer' has been shut down definitively in February. 'Logaholic' is the current counter.
'Logaholic' shows now the following figures in September: 19'134 visits / 77'628 pages
'Google-Analytics' showed 23'938 pageviews during September. The visitors come from ~221 countries!
                   ('Logaholic' August 17'293 visits / 83'526 pages; July 17'804 visits / 77'584 pages)
                        ('Google-Analytics': August = 24'701 pageviews / July = 23'582 pageviews)
Record day since 12/17/1998 = the birthday of our website: on 11/5/2007 = 13'407 visitors and 787'456 hits ('Webalizer')

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our visit of Europe didn't last long – 35 days respectively 618 miles. It had various reasons: Firstly the climate wasn't anymore so friendly – a
cold spell from Russia caused already beginning of September low temperatures and ugly weather, which – to put it mildly – made our camping life
considerably more difficult. With the existing price level in the Ukraine and in Moldova – not to speak of the European one – we asked ourselves
whether it's not preferrable to spend our retirement pension in a region that is climatically more favored. Although we felt that both European
countries (Ukraine and Moldova) are neat and worth visiting, we couldn't compare them with the Caucasus region or Iran. Somehow "that extra
something" is missing – or we are spoilt! We realized also  – the closer we were to the EU – how "overregulated", "overorganized",
"overschematized" and "overdominated" life was getting. Apart from this we knew a greater part of the Balkans already, "only" Bosnia, Montenegro,
Kosovo and Northern Cyprus would have been new to us – all the others were "yesterday's news", and if not from yesterday - from 1996.

Result: This far and no further! Thus from Moldova back to Odessa in the Ukraine and looking for quotes for the 27th container: Micronesia,
India, Eritrea and Cape Verde have been under consideration – because in the meantime Egypt became "non-accessible" – at least with an own
car. Unfortunately Saudi Arabia additionally stopped issueing transit-visas and crossing Pakistan's Balochistan was getting too dangerous.

After weighting all benefits and disadvantages and taking into account that the destination to choose should lie "somewhere in the warmer South",
we opted for the Cape Verdean Islands. MSC Shipping was ready to ship the container for US$ 2'640 in four batches, i.e. transshipments in Italy,
Portugal and the Canary Islands. Of course there were still some significant port and other fees to pay.

Because both of our cameras were stolen in Abkhazia (see News - August 2013) and the replacement in Georgia shortly before our departure to
Ukraine was just provisional, we chose to fly from Odessa with Air Arabia via Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates (once more!). There we could
fully live up to our buying frenzy and continue with the same carrier via Istanbul to Casablanca in Morocco. There we spent a (recovery-)day
before going on with Air Maroc to Praia,  the capital of Cape Verde. The island group consists of nine inhabited islands, which are partly
connected among themselves by ro-ro-ferries.

Because on islands "like these" foreign car visits are unusual and very rare (like in the Caribbean, the Pacific and the Indian Ocean) – quite contrary
to sailing boats – they can get very costly. Thanks to our entry in the Guinness Book, which was published with a picture very recently in the new
book 2014 on page 71, the Ministry of Tourism wants to help us. We assume that we get our LandCruiser released from its cage beginning of
November 2013 and will be able to explore the archipelago for about two months. Presumably we shall land around New Year's day somewhere
in Western Africa, from where we shall drive along the west coast to the South – subject to changes from our side or because they might be
imposed on us. Until time has come we shall try to put as many as possible of our Caucasus pictures online – Oman "5" (= western Hajar
Mountains) and Emirates "4" (= East Coast/Fujairah etc.) are already ready to be looked at; Iran is now also online.

Moldova: Neat rural landscape - on the way from Causeni to Bendery in Transnistria - could well be in Switzerland

Although Cape Verde is regarded as an advanced state in Africa (middle income country), the change from all our long lasting stays in Southeast
Asia and Middle East was a kind of  "culture shock" despite our recent visit to Madagascar. Even for us it takes some time to acclimatize. But in
respect of the upcoming continental West Africa region it certainly is an ideal jumping-off point and might make us more prepared for our second
crossing of Africa.
