News – January 2013 (Khasab/Musandam/Oman, January 31st, 2013)
- Website statistics: In January we were able to welcome 35'862 visitors who did 1'529'544 hits, according to 'Webalizer'.
- 'Google-Analytics' showed 53'634 Pageviews during the same period. The visitors come from ~196 countries!
- (December = 34'954 visitors – 1'244'611 Hits / November = 35'922 visitors – 1'168'977 Hits)
- ('Google-Analytics': December = 45'702 Pageviews / November = 35'951 Pageviews / 215 countries)
- Record day since 12/17/1998 = the birthday of our website: on 11/5/2007 = 13'407 visitors and 787'456 hits

- On January 28th, 2013, we left the United Arab Emirates as planned after 40 days at al-Darah, about 25 miles North of Ras al-Khaimah, and
- entered Oman for the 4th time after our previous visits of 1994, 1996 and 1999 – however for the first time into the Omani exclave of
- Musandam. The exit customs of the UAE ran smoothly on the last possible day; the 10 "grace days" for certain tourist nationalities were
- credited without any discussion, and after having paid 35 Dirham per person for the "departure tax" we could continue to the neighbor, the
- Oman entry customs, which was just 50 yards further on. The "Good Bye" of the Emiratis was kind as was the "Welcome" of the
- Omanis, although we have been asked to pay once more: AED 200 (or 20 Oman Rials) per person for the one-month "visa on
- arrival" and AED 150 (= OMR 15) for the mandatory third party insurance for the car for three months; (the 10-days visa cost "only" 50
- Dirham (= OMR 5) and the appropriate insurance "only" 80 Dirham). The Carnet seemed to be unknown at this customs post, hence it wasn't
- stamped in – never mind, we saved one page!
- Before leaving the Emirates we visited its Southern respectively Southwestern regions: Abu Dhabi – the capital – that is less hectic and relying
- less on gigantism than Dubai. In fact it owns also some "unique cherry-picks", like the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, the 'Capital Gate Tower' that is
- leaning 14 degrees more than the Tower of Pisa (= 4º), or the Yas Viceroy Hotel, where the Formula One race track leads straight through
- the hotel itself.
- After having left Abu Dhabi on the way to the "far south", the "Emirates National Auto Museum" (see pictures No. 164 ff.) cannot be
- overlooked after about 45 miles. Unfortunately it looks a bit neglected. Afterwards, the desert takes over more and more – it's along the edge
- of the infamous 'Empty Quarter of the famous 'Rub' al-Khali'. The "average visitor" might "sniff" and marvel at it the easiest while driving
- the 15 miles from Mezaira'a (Liwa) to Moreeb-Hill, is it riding a car on the tarmac, or with a 4x4 on the moderate up to 1'000 ft. high
- sand dunes, or even up the 50º (not %!) steep Moreeb-Hill with specialized desert trucks. The landscape in this region is just stunning!
