News July 2013       (Stepanakert/Nagorno Karabakh, July 11th, 2013)

Website statistics:   Unfortunately 'Webalizer' has been shut down definitively in February. 'Logaholic' is the current counter.
'Logaholic' shows now the following figures in June: 16'317 visits / 69'733 pages
'Google-Analytics' showed 22'641 pageviews during June. The visitors come from ~221 countries!
                   ('Logaholic' May 18'165 visits / 69'139 pages; April 17'123 visits / 72'575 pages)
                        ('Google-Analytics': May = 29'672 pageviews / April = 28'087 pageviews)
Record day since 12/17/1998 = the birthday of our website: on 11/5/2007 = 13'407 visitors and 787'456 hits ('Webalizer')

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We mentioned already the "Turkish spring" in our News - May/June 2013. In the meantime it wasn't anymore so apparent in the low altitude
areas of Georgia and Azerbaijan, however returned now in full bloom in Armenia. The upland meadows – located relatively high between
5'000 and 8'000 feet – are flowering in all possible colors. The latest "News" was still written in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. Since then we
visited another three countries: Azerbaijan, Armenia and currently the 176th – Nagorno Karabakh. Technically speaking it isn't a recognized
country, because before 1994 it was embedded within the territory of Azerbaijan, although the Karabakhians feel rather connected to the
Armenians. So what is simpler than to declare "self-governance"? However the international community (Security Council) wouldn't recognize
this "independence", merely the three other "self-determination-regions" around the Black Sea, i.e. Abkhazia and South Ossetia (claimed by
Georgia) and Transnistria, which lies in Moldova, identified themselves with the case and started diplomatic relations.

Well, whatever might be the right choice: Stepanakert, Nagorno Karabakh's capital with about 60'000 people, makes a good and orderly
impression. The 'country' itself has a population of approximately 150'000 and measured during the Soviet era 1'700 sq.mi. (currently including
occupied Azeri territory = 4'425 sq.mi.). The majority of the people belongs to the 'Armenian Apostolic Church', in contrast to the "legal owner"
Azerbaijan (according to the Security Council), which is predominantly Islamic. The center of the conflict could probably be also on the religious
side. Though we visited already a lot of churches and monasteries during the last week in Armenia, we'll look also at these wonderful treasures in
Nagorno Karabakh, which – besides a 2'000 year's old plane tree – make up the touristic highlights.

There's no question that previously also Azerbaijan and Armenia offered their highlights: To mention are the beautifully restored city of Säki as
well as the huge capital of Baku (2.15M). But we liked even more the scenic and attractive mountain villages of Lahic and Xinaliq. Unfortunately
the more northerly and close to the Russian border situated "showpiece-village" of Laza became – at least for the time being – uninviting due to
the enormous construction site of the ski-region of Shahdag. Armenia however, which is poorer than its Caucasus neighbors, comes up with a
vast range of old churches and monasteries, although Georgia has to offer some magnificent examples too. As soon as we can find time to update
our website, which lies idle since "Oman 3", we'll publish many beautiful pictures. The trip from Oman through the United Arab Emirates, Iran
and Turkey into the Caucasus region of Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia, brought us nearer the beauty of the Middle East. Over 3'000 photos
are waiting to be sighted and sorted out.

Armenia/Haghpat: Looking for a suitable night place - in the background the Monestary of Haghpat

Meanwhile we received the permit from Abkhazia to visit the "renegade" region of Georgia with our car until August 5th. Thereafter we have
to see if the Russians are issuing a transit visa to the Ukraine – otherwise we have to take the ferry from Batumi in Georgia to Odessa in
Ukraine. A Russian visitor visa is getting soon unaffordable, aside from needing an agent in the home country, letter of invitation and booked
hotel reservations. Individual traveling isn't getting easier in some countries .....

Finally an epilog to the backlog in updating our website: Since we left the Arabian Peninsula (Oman and UAE), we hardly find an opportunity
to dedicate more time to our website, to sort out pictures, write captions, let alone feed the diary. On one side we have deadlines with visas
(Iran, Azerbaijan, Abkhazia, maybe Russia) and time-limits for the vehicle (Azerbaijan, Armenia). On the other side we would like to visit a
number of countries in the Balkans thoroughly – not in a hurry – before the next winter is approaching to be able to ferry before the end of
this year from Turkey to Egypt (Inch Allah); Africa is calling again! – this time on the east side. This requires setting priorities – and one of
these is definitely to travel. Therefore updating is unfortunately suffering, at least for now – we're sorry!
