News November/December 2013              (São Filipe/Fogo//Cape Verde, 12/18/2013)

Website statistics:   Unfortunately 'Webalizer' has been shut down definitively in February. 'Logaholic' is the current counter.
'Logaholic' shows now the following figures in November: 21'881 visits / 77'193 pages
'Google-Analytics' showed 26'999 pageviews during November. The visitors come from ~221 countries!
                   ('Logaholic' O tober: 21'405 visits / 73'672 pages; September 19'134 visits / 77'628 pages)
                        ('Google-Analytics': October = 25'353 pageviews / September = 23'938 pageviews)
Record day since 12/17/1998 = the birthday of our website: on 11/5/2007 = 13'407 visitors and 787'456 hits ('Webalizer')

It was a very arduous take off in Cape Verde, the African archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean west of Senegal. Firstly we waited 18 days in the
capital Praia for the visa for São Tomé & Príncipe, where we wanted to spend a side trip until our container arrived, but which in the end failed.
When the vessel finally turned up with our container from the Ukraine on October 26th, a 26 day long never experienced red tape started. On
November 21st, we were ultimately allowed to leave the port of Praia, because the Ministry of Tourism took over the responsibility that we would
re-export our LandCruiser. This guarantee or a bond of US$ 17'000 (!) – the amount that our 31-year old car was valued – were the
conditions from the Customs Authorities to sign the release. As a service in return they intended to arrange a kind of "promotion action". Of course
we agreed immediately. However, when on December 12th, still no concept was in sight despite of six visits at the ministry, we boarded on "Friday
the 13th" the "fast ferry" from the Island of Santiago to the volcanic sister island of Fogo. We didn't like to spend all of our Cape Verdean stay in the
hotel in Praia. In so doing we were able at least to visit the impressive volcano (see our homepage) – but are unfortunately "tied down" again, as the
harmattan sand wind started blowing from the Sahara. This caused a sort of "haze" that was replaced by a very unusual and surprisingly heavy rain.

Unfortunately the security situation in Cape Verde isn't a hundred percent so that "wild camping" is out of the question. This in turn means that we
have to find an "affordable" hotel, which offers even secured parking – and those are very scarce. Either they charge US$ 150+ per night while
having watchmen, or about half the rate with the vehicle to be left on the unlit street. Currently we stay at a German run guesthouse in São Filipe,
which has fortunately an own inner yard but unfortunately is booked out over the coming festivities. Hence we don't know yet where we'll spend
Christmas and New Year – probably on the most westerly and smallest island of Brava, where we might park our LandCruiser at the only petrol
station – clarification is on the way.

Capw Verde/Island of Santiago: View from 'Fortaleza Real de São Filipe' to the village of 'Cidade Velha'

Certainly we won't land somewhere in Africa at the turn of the year as mentioned in our News - September/October 2013, but will remain in
Cape Verde at least until end of January 2014 due to the two-month long initial difficulties. But it allows us also to spread somewhat the huge entry
costs – never expected in such a scale. When and whereto we shall ship afterwards is still "written in the stars"; it might be climatically already too
late to cross West Africa, because as port of destination only Tangier in Morocco can be chosen – both pricewise and for the bureaucracy.

We wish everybody a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
