News January 2017              (Bintulu/Malaysia, 1/31/2017)

check now and then also our information site → "what's happening?"

Website statistics:   'Webalizer' has been shut down in February 2013. 'Logaholic' became 2016 too unreliable.
Thus 'Google-Analytics' remains as the only reliable counter for us.
'Google-Analytics' showed 26'124 pageviews during January 2017. The visitors came from 235 countries!
                        ('Google-Analytics': December 2016 = 21'128 pageviews / November = 23'612 pageviews)
Record day since 12/17/1998 = the birthday of our website: on 11/5/2007 = 13'407 visitors and 787'456 hits ('Webalizer')

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unfortunately our Myanmar (Burma) trip in January is again history. As we wrote in our last "News – December 2016", we arrived
unexpectedly on December 26th, 2016, in Yangon, formerly Rangoon, because our LandCruiser in its 29th container would reach one
month delayed its destination of Bintulu/Sarawak in East Malaysia. Well, it arrived finally a bit earlier on January 22nd, 2017, while we
followed it two days later.

The 28 days in Myanmar were simply awesome! even without our car aside. It's clear that we would have liked to know it near by,
however as backpackers public transport offered us partly an extremely positive alternative: Railway and river navigation showed to be
unique, although busses and shared taxis proved to be convenient as well (unfortunately they preferred to race). During our "Great Circle",
we visited counterclockwise the following main areas: Yangon (Rangoon) start and end point Golden Rock near Kyaiktiyo Bago
(Pegu) train journey to Inle Lake Mandalay train ride over the famous Goitak Viaduct and in the end a trip with the "Government
Boat" on the Irrawaddy River from Mandalay to Bagan (Pagan), i.e. Nyaung U. Afterwards we flew via Yangon back to Kuala Lumpur,
where we made a two-days layover, before continuing with Air Asia to Bintulu. The whole 4-weeks "fun" did cost for the two of us in
Myanmar US$2'460, in addition US$265 for air tickets from Kuala Lumpur/Malaysia to Yangon/Myanmar and return.

The release of our car from the Port of Bintulu went smoothly for the third time. This time it was really fast (about 1½ hours) and again
reasonable (US$310). Fortunately, after a few attempts even our Toyota started after 56 days. Because everything closed down one day
later on "Chinese New Year's Eve", Friday, January 27th, and the following three holidays, we postponed driving northeast to Miri,
125 miles [200km], which is anyway slightly more expensive. There the third and likely last rejuvenation of our car will take place,
presumably after February 6th. Hopefully it will be equally successful like the two previous ones in 2006 and 2012.

Malaysia/Sarawak: Rainy weather at Tusan Beach, 23 miles [37km] south of Miri

We don't know yet how long this overhaul will take, yet we guess in any case one month. However from experience we assume that it
will take longer. There will be news on our site "what's happening" about the advance of the repairs. Once everything is settled to our full
satisfaction, our way will lead for the fourth time to Indonesia, this time focusing on Kalimantan, Northern Sulawesi and the Moluccas.
