News December 2017              (Sorong/Indonesia, 12/31/2017)

check now and then also our information site → "what's happening?"

Website statistics:   'Webalizer' has been shut down in February 2013. 'Logaholic' became too unreliable in Sep. 2016.
Thus 'Google-Analytics' remains unfortunately the only somewhat reliable counter for us.
'Google-Analytics' showed 11'987 pageviews during December 2017. The visitors came from 235 countries!
                        ('Google-Analytics': November = 10'466 pageviews / October = 12'381 pageviews / Sep. = 11'836 pageviews)
Record day since 12/17/1998 = the birthday of our website: on 11/5/2007 = 13'407 visitors and 787'456 hits ('Webalizer')

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We mentioned already on December 24th, 2017, in our "Christmas Message" in "what's happening" that we got stuck in Sorong in West
Papua due to the extension process of our Indonesian visa. We decided not to fly to Malaysia for a visa run, because of the relatively costly
flight fares, but to look here for a sponsor, which turned out to be not an easy task. Thus we were able to apply only on December 28th, for
a one-month extension. As the immigration people have their office closed over the festivities during twice five days and the issuance of an
extension takes four working days, we shall get our passports back at the earliest on January 5th, or even 8th.

However, the customs authorities in Sorong proved to be very accommodating as we approached them to transfer our car's customs
document – the Carnet de Passage – that expired on December 25th, to a new one, which started on the 26th. They didn't even charge a fee,
while the immigration office made us pay Rupees 722'000 for 2 persons (=US$58). Also the police (Polres) was on its best behavior, when
they issued the unavoidable "Suran Jalan" (travel permit), which is compulsory to travel around Papua and West Papua. All our destination
requests have been accepted without restriction. But the bureaucracy involved, visiting the authorities as well as the preparations for it, need
a lot of time, particularly over Christmas and New Year. Unfortunately we haven't been able to find tires 7.50R16 that match our split rims –
either they are 15 inches, or they aren't steel belted, or then they are much wider than 235/85. Apparently the following rule applies here: If
there's no demand, there's no offer.

Now a few notices regarding the continuation of our last "News November 2017": Trying a second attempt to reach the ferry from Weda in
the Moluccas to West-Papua has been paid off on December 8th. Punctual at 2pm, the ferry boat "KMP Arar" showed up on the horizon.
There was firstly some unloading and afterwards a lot of loading until its departure after midnight. The whole procedure appeared almost like a
small funfair with stalls, kiosks and blaring loudspeakers and many spectators. We reached the first stopover of Patani after six hours of sailing.
Patani is still situated on Halmahera, but has no road access. Departure was later in the morning at 9am: Five hours until Gebe, another island
that still belongs to the Moluccas. There is large-scale mining of nickel going on. On the way to Gebe, we crossed for the 23rd time the
equator from North to South – though without "crossing-the-line ceremony". The 2½-hour stop at Gebe was a bit longer than before at Patani.
Our vehicle and we were almost alone between Gebe and Gag, the first landing site in West Papua. It was interesting to see how provincial
borders have an impact on supplies. But it was even more fascinating, who boarded in Gag for Sorong: All of them were dark-skinned
Papuans. Originally the Moluccans descended also from Melanesia, but got mixed by Southeast Asian and European peoples and therefore
are nowadays more fair-skinned. However the Indonesian Papuans remained comparably rather black, like the Melanesians living further
east in the Pacific, e.g. Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. Gag is also an island where nickel is mined, but belongs
geographically already to the Raja Ampat region in West-Papua (former Irian Jaya).

Indonesia/North-Moluccas/Halmahera: 'KMP Arar' after its arrival in Weda – our home for the next two nights

Currently our itinerary for January 2018 looks as follows: We assume that we can leave Sorong on the Trans Papua Road not later than
January 8th, 2018. In doing so we shall try to drive towards Manokwari as long as the road conditions are allowing it. Had we to return, we
would embark on the weekly ferry to Wahai on Seram in the South Moluccas, which usually leaves on a Wednesday. This journey has a
stopover at Fakfak and lasts two nights resp. more than 40 hours. However, should we be able to reach Manokwari, which lies about 370mi
[600km] east of Sorong, we would drive from there about 150 miles [250km] to the South to Bintuni, still located on the Bird's Head
Peninsula. In between we would visit also the Anggi Lakes in the Arfak Mountains. Provided that we reached finally Bintuni, we would sail on
a ferry along the west coast of the peninsula back to Sorong, to look as quickly as possible for the sea journey to the South Moluccas
mentioned above. Sounds a bit complicated, right?
